The prairie dock is a species of flowering plant in the family Asteraceae. Showing its close relation to the cup plant, its flowers look like small sunflowers, but grow on stalks up to 6 ft tall in the summer. The leaves are in a cluster at the base and are large and spade shaped. Like the cup plant, prairie dock needs 6-8 hours of sunlight to bloom properly. The prairie dock does better with drier soil and is quite drought tolerant once established. Seeds do best if planted in the fall, as in our Group B plant list.

They are a great attractor of bees and also birds, who come in fall to eat the seeds.
