Collection: Ontario Native Seeds
We have a growing list of native plants, so to make it easier for you, this collections gives you just the seed options. All are collected from our own property in Harrow, ON, where we do not use pesticides or other chemicals.
Germinating native seeds
For those who have never tried planting native seeds, here are some of the different ways they need to be treated when planting. I have also included some information on how to bypass the fall planting if you prefer to plant in the spring (anything I mention here is something that I have personally tried and had success with, but if you have tried something else and want to share so that I can add it here, please do let me know! These are just the seeds that I have for sale, so the list will be updated as I add new species.
Group A: Relatively easy to germinate, can plant in fall or spring; fall planting may help germination rate (but I have done pretty well with spring germination)
Anise Hyssop (needs light to germinate so only cover lightly with soil)
Grey-headed Coneflower (better in fall, cover lightly with soil)
Dense Blazing Star or Liatris
Blue Lobelia
Group B: Plant in fall or even winter, but so that some cold treatment occurs (be sure to mulch or protect area/pots so that the area does not completely freeze solid)
False Indigo Bush (I have successfully put in boiling water and then let soak for 24 hours and gotten great germination in spring; doing this seems to scarify them)
Button Bush (I have also used the same technique I used for false indigo and been very successful in getting germination)
Common Milkweed (cover lightly, as they need light to germinate)
Giant Beardtongue (can be planted any time from Nov to March; earlier is better)
Wild Geranium
Virginia Mountain Mint
Cup plant, compass plant, and prairie dock
Ironweed
Blue Vervain (cover lightly, as they need light to germinate)
New England Aster
